Studies have shown that the very first day of school is the most stressful and the day that students find it the most difficult to cope with. Parents should start looking out for behaviour changes that indicate these worries.
Here are three proactive steps to guide your child’s transition into Secondary School
1. Provide a sense of preparedness for the first day of school
Don’t leave things to the first morning of secondary school. Feeling unprepared creates a lot of anxiety and stress for the student.
How to help your child develop the sense of preparedness
To help your child develop the sense of preparedness, you can
- involve him/her in the decision making process (purchase of school uniforms, school bags, stationery)
- test out the travel routes from school to home (vice versa) with your child
- find time to talk about the differences and expectations between primary school and secondary school. This will also serve as a space for your child to share about his/ her anxieties. When they do, remember to assure them while validating their feelings.
2. A schedule for stability
Knowing that there is a stable and predictable routine that they can follow after school acts as a source of comfort and makes home a safe place for them to go back to.
How to organise a schedule for your Sec 1 child
This schedule can include a morning routine, a night routine, a space for the family to communicate and share about their day, and rest and down time.

3. Academic Expectations
As a parent, what changes should I be aware of to enable a smooth transition for my child to Sec 1?
Managing their expectations at Sec 1 will impact their attitude towards their studies. Take time to talk about the changes in syllabus and subjects, effective time management and effective study techniques that works best for secondary school students. Understanding the overview of subjects, marking rubrics and grading system will give them a big picture and make sense of their secondary school experience.
