Understanding the GCE A-Level

The Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Advanced Level, or GCE A-Level, is a globally recognised academic qualification. In Singapore, students typically sit for these exams in their second year of Junior College, third year of Millennia Institution, or sixth year of an Integrated Programme.

This qualification is a prerequisite for entry into prestigious local universities such as the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and Singapore Management University (SMU), and is widely accepted by top universities worldwide.

A key difference from the international A-Level is that Singapore’s syllabus is designed by the Ministry of Education (MOE). Students can select subjects at different levels of study: Higher 1 (H1), Higher 2 (H2), and for school candidates, Higher 3 (H3). While Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Syllabus B is a valid university admission requirement, its marks are not factored into the university admission score.
