The Singapore Integrated Programme (IP) is a 6 year programme offered by top schools such as Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH), Hwa Chong Institution (HCI), Raffles Institution (RI), Raffles Girls’ School (RGS), Victoria School (VS), Dunman High School (DHS), and Temasek Junior College (TJC). This programme allows students to bypass the O-Levels and proceed directly to the A-Levels.
However, transitioning into the IP can be challenging for both students and parents due to the lack of a standardised syllabus. Each school has its own curriculum and assessment methods, making the first one and a half years a period of intense adjustment. The diverse and demanding holistic activities further add to the difficulty, often leaving students and parents struggling to understand what is expected of them. This can lead to a drop in grades as they try to navigate this new and complex educational landscape.
Difficulties Lower Sec IP students face in transition
Here are some difficulties students face when the transitioned into Lower Sec IP:
- Lack of a standardised syllabus:
- Each school has its own curriculum and assessment methods, making the first 1.5 years a period where they have to figure and find resources to support their own learning independently.
- Holistic activities:
- IP schools focus on students' holistic developement and provide many activities to support non-academic endeavours. Students has to decipher how to prioritise and understand what is expected of them.
These are some reasons that lead to a drop in grades as they need time to navigate the new and complex changes.
Gain clarity on expectations to focus your efforts and prioritise effectively
The key solution to navigating the Integrated Programme successfully is ensuring that students clearly understand what to expect throughout their journey. One crucial milestone is the end-of-year exams in Secondary 2.
These exams not only assess the students’ grasp of the curriculum but also play a pivotal role in determining their subject combinations for the following years. At this juncture, students are also presented with the opportunity to apply for special programmes within their IP schools, such as the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programme, the Humanities Programme (HP), SMTP (Science and Math talent Programmes) and other enrichment initiatives.
These programmes often require students to go through a selection process that may include interviews and additional assessments, aiming to identify and nurture their unique talents and interests. Understanding these expectations and milestones allows students to focus their efforts and prioritise their academic and extracurricular activities effectively, ensuring a well-rounded and successful IP experience
