Indigo Language Arts Programme and its Relevance to IP schools
The Death of Literature?
In 2015, a shift in educational choices caught our attention – a decline in students opting for literature studies at the upper secondary level. This decreasing interest suggests that fewer students see its value and significance in their educational journey. In a world where practicality often takes the lead, students and parents muse about its real-world relevance.
The Power of Literature
Yet, let’s not underestimate the power of literature. It’s more than just reading stories, plays and poems; it’s about nurturing skills that are indispensable in various aspects of life. Think of it as a toolkit for critical thinking, a catalyst for creativity, and a forge for communication skills. Through literature, students glimpse into diverse worlds and gain a richer understanding of different perspectives, igniting empathy and global awareness. These skills don’t just thrive in the classroom; they blossom in personal growth and engagement with the world.
Strengthening the Presence of Literature
Challenges notwithstanding, the Ministry of Education acknowledges the profound advantages of studying literature. This conviction fuels its commitment to offer literature as an examinable subject in O- and A-level curricula. An encouraging trend has also emerged – a surge in literature-related questions and skills within exams. This wave sweeps across both O-level English and A-level General Paper (GP) exams, intertwining literature’s essence with the broader canvas of education.
Literature in IP Schools
In the Integrated Programme (IP) schools, literature finds a place within the English subject, now known as Language Arts. Language Arts programs aim to develop students’ overall language proficiency, critical thinking abilities, and effective communication skills. This can involve activities such as literary analysis, syntax study, creative writing, public speaking, grammar and vocabulary building. Language Arts often emphasise practical communication skills for real-world situations.
Recognising the treasure trove of benefits it offers, Indigo has masterfully woven these essential threads of success into our through-train tuition programme. Established in 2011 and as the pioneer of Secondary IP and Express English tuition, Indigo has seamlessly integrated the skills needed to excel in language arts. Our curriculum is meticulously crafted to instil the art of effective communication, literary analysis, and critical thinking. Our dedicated educators infuse passion and expertise into every session, nurturing a love for literature while imparting the techniques to decode and create impactful narratives.
One thing is clear as we navigate this evolving educational landscape: literature’s allure endures, and efforts to kindle its spark continue to brighten the learning path.
