Understanding the GCE O-Level
The Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (GCE O-Level) examination is a national exam taken by students in Singapore at the end of their fourth year in secondary school (Express stream) or fifth year (Normal [Academic] stream).
The exam is jointly administered by the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), the Ministry of Education, Singapore (MOE), and the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB). CIE sets and marks papers for all subjects except Mother Tongue, while MOE and SEAB set and mark all Mother Tongue papers.
O-Level Results
O-Level results determine students’ eligibility for various post-secondary education options like Junior Colleges (JCs), Polytechnics, Institute of Technical Education (ITE), etc. Each institution sets specific entry requirements based on GCE O-Level grades in relevant subjects. Strong performance in specific GCE O-Level subjects may also be required for pursuing certain courses in post-secondary institutions.
O-Level Grading System
GCE O-Level results are graded from A1 (highest) to A2, B3, B4, C5, C6, D7, E8 and 9 (lowest), with each grade representing a specific level of achievement. Some subjects may also award distinctions (A1 or A2) for exceptionally high performance. Oral/Aural examinations in Mother Tongue/Higher Mother Tongue are graded as Distinction, Merit, Pass, or Ungraded.
