The General Paper is a difficult subject to score well in, even if students have consistently been getting As in English in Secondary School. This is due to the highly complex and analytical nature of the General Paper.
A new element of the General Paper is the Application Question, based on the Comprehension passage given. The Application Question is usually based on ‘your society’, i.e. Singapore society. Students will have to write a mini-essay based on their knowledge of the topic in the context of Singapore. It costs 10 marks, or 10% of the entire paper, which is crucial for students aiming for As. It is common for students to feel ‘stuck’ initially, as it is difficult to write a coherent, informed, and organised response under time constraints. The Singaporean Context will help students acquire content knowledge and critical skills to do well in AQ.
Another tough segment to overcome is the essay segment. Of 12 questions, typically 2-3 questions will be based on the student’s society, which refers to Singaporean society. It is advisable for students to be well-versed in matters pertaining to Singapore to enable students to answer the essay questions critically. Learn how to organise points and develop an argument in The Singaporean Context.
