Subject Combinations in Junior College

Understanding JC Subject Combinations

One of the most important decisions you will make when you begin Junior College is selecting your subject combinations. These choices will significantly impact your A-level results, University applications, and future career pathways.

Students often have to make important decisions soon after school begins. Sometimes, there isn’t enough time to carefully consider all options, and they may be influenced by the school’s strategy, friends, or seniors’ experiences without making informed decisions.
What are H1, H2 and H3 Subjects?

In the JC system, subjects are classified into three categories H1, H2 and H3. These categories reflect the depth and complexity of the subject content, with H3 being the most advanced. Most JC students will take H1 and H2 subjects.

  • Breadth over depth: H1 subjects cover a broad range of content but do so in less depth than H2 subjects. They are considered lighter in terms of content and workload.
  • Worth 1 Academic Unit: H1 subjects contribute 1 academic unit when calculating your university admission score.
  • Compulsory H1 subjects: All JC students must take a compulsory H1 subject in General Paper (GP) or Knowledge and Inquiry (KI), Project Work, and Mother Tongue Language.
  • Depth over breadth: H2 subjects cover the same areas of study as H1 but delve deeper into the subject matter. They are more comprehensive and require a more rigorous understanding and application of concepts.
  • Worth 2 Academic Units: H2 subjects carry twice the weight of H1 subjects in your university admission score computation.
  • Typically more demanding: H2 subjects are generally more content-heavy and require strong analytical, critical thinking, and writing skills, depending on the subject.
  • For the academically ambitious: H3 subjects provide further enrichment and depth for students with a strong interest in a particular subject. These subjects often go beyond the A-Level syllabus, exploring more advanced or specialized areas of study. They are optional and usually taken by high-achieving students.
A Key Consideration
One key factor to consider when choosing your subject combinations is the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) revised A-level rank point calculations for university admission. Even though the Ministry has revised the rank point calculation to 70 RP, students can choose to do 3 H2 subjects instead of 4 H2 subjects. However, what is beneficial for you and your university application – to do 3 H2 or 4 H2 subjects?

Choosing your subject combination is a major decision and it is important to be well-informed about how your choices will affect your A-level performance and future university applications. Learn more about the aspects to look at in the upcoming seminar on JC Subject Combination.

Contrasting Discipline
Economics class
As per the Ministry of Education’s requirements, it is necessary to have at least one subject from a different discipline. For instance, if your main focus is on science subjects, you should also have a humanities or arts subject, and vice versa. Economics is a new humanities subject that you might want to consider as one of your H2 subject options. Before making a decision, it is important to understand the variances between H2 and H1 economics, its relevance for university applications, and the content coverage at Junior College.
