Understanding Weighted Assessments: A Parent’s Guide

Singapore’s education landscape has been evolving in recent years, with a clear shift towards a more holistic approach to learning.

As early as 2019, MOE began phasing out mid-year examinations for key levels in secondary school—including Secondary 1 and Secondary 3 students. This was part of a broader initiative to ease the academic pressure and allow both primary and secondary students to focus on the process of learning rather than just performance in high-stakes exams.

In place of these traditional tests, schools now use a more progressive assessment model known as weighted assessments. While this shift has been welcomed by many educators, it’s natural for parents to wonder how it affects their child’s academic progress—especially with fewer familiar benchmarks to rely on.

This blog aims to provide a clear understanding of weighted assessments, their benefits, and, most importantly, how parents can support their children to thrive within this new system.

What Are Weighted Assessments?

Weighted assessments are an alternative approach to evaluating students’ learning, designed to be less stressful, more frequent, and more reflective of actual understanding. Unlike the traditional Singapore exam system, where mid-year and final exams carried a large percentage of a student’s grade, weighted assessments distribute evaluation across multiple smaller tasks or tests throughout the year.

These assessments may take the form of:

Performance tasks – Group presentations, project work, experiments, or other practical activities that demonstrate understanding and application of concepts.

Written tests – Shorter, timed assessments that test comprehension in a more traditional format, but on a smaller scale than typical year-end examinations.

In most schools, students will face one weighted assessment per subject per term, with each carrying a specific weight that contributes to the overall grade for the year. A typical breakdown might look like this:

  • 15% from Term 1 Weighted Assessment
  • 15% from Term 2 Weighted Assessment
  • 15% from Term 3 Weighted Assessment
  • 55% from a Semestral Exam in Term 4

This model supports continuous learning, provides multiple checkpoints throughout the year, and reduces the all-or-nothing pressure associated with the high-stakes mid-year and end-of-year exams.

Example of Weighted Assessments for a Sec 3 Student

Let’s take a look at what weighted assessments might look like for a Secondary 3 Chemistry student.

In Term 1, students might sit for a written paper covering atomic structure and the periodic table. The test could last 45 minutes and involve both multiple-choice and short-answer questions.

In Term 2, the assessment might take the form of a performance task, such as a hands-on practical experiment on chemical reactions. Students could be asked to plan and conduct the experiment, record their observations, and present their findings in a report or group presentation.

Term 3 could include another written test or a project-based task involving real-world applications of chemistry, such as analysing water quality or exploring chemical processes in everyday life.

This variety encourages different skill sets, from analytical thinking and communication to collaboration and creativity—all of which are crucial for success in and beyond the classroom.

Benefits of Weighted Assessments

Fostering a Positive Learning Environment

Weighted assessments reduce the high stakes often associated with major exams. Students no longer feel that a single exam will make or break their academic year. This creates a more relaxed and supportive environment, helping students to focus on understanding and application rather than rote memorisation. In turn, they become more comfortable with learning as a process, not just a performance.

Promoting Effective Learning

Rather than testing a large chunk of content all at once, weighted assessments provide regular feedback that helps both teachers and students identify learning gaps early. Teachers can then step in with timely support or re-teaching of key concepts, enabling students to reinforce understanding before moving on.

This formative assessment approach also allows students to track their own progress, encouraging self-reflection and responsibility for their learning.

Encouraging Holistic Development

Without the time and energy typically consumed by preparing for a mid-year exam, schools are better able to nurture students’ non-academic skills. Through project work, presentations, and collaborative tasks, students learn essential soft skills such as:

  • Critical thinking
  • Communication
  • Creativity
  • Collaboration

These are not just buzzwords—they are the competencies valued in today’s fast-evolving world, and weighted assessments create space in the curriculum to cultivate them meaningfully.

Developing a Growth Mindset

The frequent and varied nature of weighted assessments also means students have multiple opportunities to improve throughout the year. Mistakes in Term 1 are not career-ending—they are stepping stones. This shift empowers students to view learning setbacks as part of the process, encouraging a growth mindset where effort and persistence are celebrated alongside achievement.

Nurturing Intrinsic Motivation

When the pressure of large-scale exams is removed, students begin to rediscover the joy of learning. Rather than studying purely to score well, they become more curious, engaged, and self-driven. This intrinsic motivation is a powerful force that can sustain them through future academic challenges—and even beyond the classroom.

Supporting Your Child's Learning Journey

As a parent, it’s understandable to feel uncertain about these changes. You might worry about how to gauge your child’s progress or whether they’re truly keeping up. The good news is that you don’t have to navigate this alone.

Here are some ways you can actively support your child under the weighted assessment model:

Stay in regular touch with subject teachers. Ask about your child’s performance in recent assessments, and find out whether any particular subjects may require extra attention or support.

Celebrate effort, not just results. Encourage your child to see challenges as opportunities to learn. If they score lower than expected on one weighted assessment, reassure them that improvement is possible—and expected.

With assessments spread across the year, help your child plan ahead. Build a simple revision schedule at the start of each term, especially when multiple weighted assessments fall close together.

Remind your child (and yourself!) that the goal is deep understanding and steady progress—not perfection. Praise curiosity, question-asking, and initiative just as much as you would praise high scores.
