The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is a significant milestone for young learners in Singapore. Taken towards the end of their sixth year in primary school, it assesses their academic development and paves the way for their secondary education journey.
This guide aims to provide a clear understanding of the PSLE for both students and parents:
Who takes the PSLE?
All Singaporean students enrolled in Primary 6 at government, government-aided, or independent schools must take the PSLE.
What subjects are tested?
The PSLE assesses students’ proficiency in four core areas:
- English Language: Tests reading comprehension, writing skills, and grammar usage.
- Mother Tongue Language: Evaluates proficiency in the student’s respective mother tongue (e.g., Chinese, Malay, Tamil).
- Mathematics: Assesses problem-solving abilities and mathematical knowledge.
- Science: Evaluates understanding of scientific concepts and their application.
How are students assessed?
The PSLE format utilizes a combination of written papers and coursework:
- Written Papers: Students complete timed examinations for each subject, testing their knowledge and understanding.
- Continuous Assessment (CA): Teachers assess students throughout the year through assignments, projects, and class participation. This CA component contributes to the final PSLE score in some subjects.
Grading System:
PSLE results are not expressed in letter grades (A, B, C etc.). Instead, students receive a standardized score of achievement levels (AL) for each subject, which comes in numerical form from (1-8). The total score can range from AL 4- 32. These scores are then used to generate an overall banding based on a national performance scale.
Importance of the PSLE:
The PSLE results play a crucial role in determining a student’s placement in secondary school:
- Secondary School Posting: Students are streamed into various secondary schools (ranging from Express to Normal [Academic]) based on their PSLE banding.
- Subject Selection: Stronger performance in specific PSLE subjects may provide greater flexibility in choosing elective subjects at the secondary level.
